Meta Mandatory v26 Update Disables Smart Glasses Camera When Privacy LED Is Tampered With

Meta is rolling out a mandatory v26 firmware update to all Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Meta Glasses that addresses a significant privacy loophole. The update detects when the white capture LED — designed to alert bystanders that the camera is active — has been physically tampered with or destroyed, and disables the camera entirely until the LED is functional again.

What Changed

Since the second-gen Ray-Ban Meta glasses launched in 2024, software has prevented the camera from functioning if the LED is covered. However, some users circumvented this by physically drilling out the LED hardware, removing the light entirely while keeping the camera operational. Reports in early August also showed the LED could be obscured with cheap stickers purchased online.

The v26 update adds hardware-level tamper detection. If the glasses detect the LED circuit has been modified, damaged, or physically removed, the camera is permanently disabled until a service repair restores it.

Enforcement Beyond Software

Meta announced it is also taking steps beyond the firmware update:

• Removing ads, posts, and Marketplace listings for services that modify smart glasses to disable the LED
• Legal action against individuals and businesses offering LED removal services
• Enhanced detection in future hardware generations with tamper-evident LED designs

What This Means for Owners

For the vast majority of Meta smart glasses owners who haven{"'"}t modified their device, the update changes nothing — the camera and LED will continue to function normally. The update is mandatory and will install automatically. If you purchased modified glasses from a third party, the camera will stop working after the update until the LED is repaired.
